Languages in the CommunityStudents at Hove Park access language learning and cultural understanding in more than just languages lessons. Across Key Stages 3 & 4 students learn about key global issues and deepen their cultural understanding through a significant number of other curriculum areas. These include:

Citizenship – The role of the media in advertising across different languages.

CP – Challenging stereotypes in fashion, homelessness and creating a travel and tourism world fair.

Creative Arts – World of Music, Art, Dance and Drama (WOMADD).

English – World Storytelling Day; bi-lingual students read stories from their young childhood and compare with English fairy tales and fables | Creative Writing Competition (2009, theme of Neighbours, winner Ruby Holmes)

Food Technology – Students learn about language and culture by exploring recipes and food from Holland, Greece, India and Japan

ICT – Linguapoint: students design a language teaching piece of software for primary school students.

Maths – Exploring Roman, Egyptian and Babylonian numbers.

Science – EDF and “Switch Off Fortnight”.

Technology – World Architecture.

International Studies and Certificate of Personal Effectiveness – Marketing a product in a foreign language, creating a storybook in a foreign language for primary students.

Languages Offered and Pathways

At the Language College we strive to ensure our students enjoy a wide range of languages and global learning in their time with us. All students study at least one language at Hove Park from Year 7 to Year 11; we believe this gives our students a competitive edge over others in the workplace as well as enhance their intercultural and personal skills. We teach an extensive range of languages including Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish and have also offered other languages according to students’ needs such as British Sign Language, Farsi, Polish, Swedish and Turkish.

We offer a number of different qualifications which are tailored to the needs of every student. These range from traditional GCSEs (www.edexcel.org.uk), AS and A2 courses (www.aqa.org.uk) to applied learning courses such as NVQs and Asset Languages (www.ocr.org.uk). In order to enhance our vocational provision in languages, Hove Park is hoping to host both Level 2 and 3 Diploma courses in Languages and International Communication in 2011 across the west of Brighton & Hove for students aged 14 -19.

At present there are three different languages routes students can access - please click here for further information.
