Early Bird Art & Design Programme

Year 9 students have been participating in the Early Bird Art and Design programme. This gives students who are passionate about Art and Design a chance to explore more of what the subject has to offer. Students who would like a taster before Art and Design GCSE or those who really enjoy the subject have been given the opportunity to get involved in various activities to enhance their talents and interests.

Students enjoyed a rare opportunity to see the exhibition ‘Champagne Life’ Exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery earlier this year before it opened to the public. Borrowing its name from a title of one of the paintings in the show, the exhibition celebrated the Gallery’s 30th birthday with an exciting collection of art from female artists. Students were wowed with large scale portraits, neon paintings, two life-sized brown cows, made from clay and chicken wire, huge copper sculptures and twisted perspects. They were given a guided tour and a chance to discuss the artwork followed by a workshop on the artist Julia Dault. Hove Park School students made some really exciting work in response to the bold sculptures. They played with materials and worked very well in groups.

After school workshops on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the Valley art huts have seen Year 9 students making some excellent work in a creative atmosphere. Students have been drawing, painting, sculpting, spray painting, collaging and making. Each student will create a portfolio of work they can take with them to the next level of art and design, this is particularly helpful for those who have opted for Art and Design GCSE.

Entries to Brighton’s Snow Dogs by the Sea have been submitted and fingers crossed we will get to see some of Hove Park student’s designs painted on the giant snowdog sculptures that will be in an art trail across the city this Autumn! Proceeds from auctioning the sculptures will go to the Martet’s hospice.

Next term Early Bird clubs will involve competition work with Miss Clark: Tuesdays 3 – 4.30pm, animals from the Booth Museum with Miss Griffin Wednesdays 3 – 4.30pm, Clay work with Mr Bear, Thursdays 3 – 4.30 pm. If you are in year nine and fancy joining in the activities – see these teachers!
