What is Enterprise
Enterprise education is viewed by the government as a key component in improving the economic well-being of the nation and individuals. Private and public sector businesses need employees with a ‘can do’ attitude, a willingness to take on responsibility, a creative and innovative approach to solving problems, and the ability to cope with uncertainty and change and make reasonable risk/reward assessments. Such enterprising skills and attributes help in the creation of new businesses but are equally important for individuals to be successful in their personal lives. They are a key output of work-related learning, which became a statutory curriculum requirement for 14–16 year olds in September 2004.
Enterprise at Hove Park
Since September 2005, all schools have had an obligation to deliver the equivalent of five days of “Enterprise Education” at Key Stage 4. The focus of this is to raise student’s awareness in three categories:
- Enterprise Capability (decision-making, leadership and management skills)
- Financial capability (financial planning, taking financial responsibility)
- Business & Economic understanding (learning about how businesses operate)
Much of this will be covered through core subjects, but to complete our school’s full provision we organise activity days for year 9, 10 and 11 full cohorts. The activities that students have recently been involved in include:
Year 9 - An Enterprise skills day that introduces pupils to Enterprise, and develops their ability to find enterprising solutions to problems both in school as well as out. The focus for this event was on sustainability and the local environment.
Year 10 - A day that focuses students on money management- bank accounts, financial contracts, loans and avoiding debt.
Year 11 - An interview day using facilitators from the world of business that covers producing a winning CV, recognising individual strengths and weaknesses, and realistic interview practise.
The programme has been developed to allow students to progress through KS3 and KS4, giving them important advise and experience at the time when it is most relevant.
