Our Year 10 students swapped the classroom for the canopy today, tackling zip wires, rope bridges and Tarzan swings on a Go Ape adventure! 💪
A brilliant day of teamwork, courage and stepping outside comfort zones (quite literally, several metres up!). Well done to everyone who faced their fears and made it across every obstacle.
Ninety nine students from Year 9 completed the expedition section of the Bronze award this year, which helps them well on the way to completion of all four sections of the DofE award! There were two expeditions, one each for HOV and PAR bands, both in June. Students walked in teams of up to seven up on on to the glorious South Downs outside Brighton, along the South Downs Way to Truleigh hill and a little further before switching back and heading north to navigate some challenging legs and arrive at Hillside the scout camp at Small Dole.
The students excelled at their campcraft. Many drew on their experience of Valley Challenge in Year 8. They pitched tents and cooked an evening meal on the Trangia stove. There were all sorts of fantastic and original dishes cooked, many delicious! Students had to decamp after a breakfast- sometimes cooked- and walk along the Weald navigating through a number of fields using footbridges over minor streams, all the time using map and compass to stay on the correct route and through staff checkpoints.
Day two was longer and with the tiredness, more challenging, though for both HOV and PAR, the weather on day 1 had been exceptionally changeable, wet and/or windy. This week the 99 students received their HPS DofE badges for completion of the section. All that remains is to complete and get assessor reports for the others and receive the full award from the DofE! There are over 20 others also doing the award not on the expedition. These students can receive a Certificate of Achievement for completing the three other sections. We will have an evening celebration in the autumn, so students should set about using the time to get assessors sign off on eDofE any sections already completed.
Pictured here you can see our amazing DofE students at a recent assembly celebrating their achievements.
This week we completed our Rewilding project for the summer. This year. we have teamed up with the charity Action Through Conservation to work with 35 young people, developing their love of the natural world and understanding of biodiversity.
With funding of £5000, we decided to develop an outside classroom, with seating arriving in the next few weeks. We have also made habitats for amphibian, birds and solitary bees and just yesterday we spotted slow worms, so the area is transforming from a grass monoculture to biodiverse ecosystem.
In addition, two students have fully funded places at week-long summer camps, which includes star-gazing, woodcraft skills and immersion in the natural world.
On Monday, Year 10 students visited the physics department at Oxford to get a taste of how physics intersects with biochemical research – they had workshops in DNA engineering combating viruses, active matter, and antibiotic fluorescence diagnosis, all cutting edge areas of research which will transform the medical profession in the future. All this meters away from the lab where Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin.
It was a sweltering day but all students did really well and learnt a lot.
Beach Safety and Cold Water Swimming
We strongly recommend to our families that children stay at home during this extreme hot weather, however, we realise with our proximity to the sea some children will be going to the beach. We would like to share this web address for guidance on advice on safe swimming:

What a couple of days for Group 1 at Rockley! Yesterday saw the group take on paddle boarding, with plenty of students finding their feet on the water, and a special mention to Emmeline who pulled off an impressive headstand!
Today brought a new challenge in the form of The Gauntlet, climbing and belaying each other all the way up into the tree canopy. A standout performance from Rory, who showed remarkable speed up the ropes. Brilliant effort all round! 🌳
What a day at Rockley! After a damp start (even Jimbo, our beloved mascot, took a soaking!), the sun came out and delivered a brilliant afternoon for everyone.
Our students have thrown themselves into this afternoon's activities including axe throwing and the zip wire.
With the sun now shining and smiles all round, it's shaping up to be an unforgettable experience.

On Wednesday 3 June, our Year 9 and Year 10 Sports Leaders took part in the Brighton & Hove Primary School Rackets Festival at Withdean.
The festival gave primary pupils the chance to try sports including badminton, table tennis, tennis and squash. After attending a short training session beforehand, our Sports Leaders were ready to help run the event and support the younger children throughout the day.
They all did an amazing job and were praised by coaches and school teachers for their enthusiasm and professionalism. If you see them around school, please congratulate them.
To celebrate World Bee Day on May 20th, the Gardening Enrichment students worked with a great team from Wilmott Dixon to construct bee hotels which will be placed in our Valley Garden and the Rewilding area at Nevill. This is part of a wider scientific study by the University of Sussex to investigate which colours make the best nesting habitats for our solitary bees. This is a fantastic example of citizen science and one which Hove Park is very proud to be part of.
This week, saw the launch of our exciting NeuroRobotics project in partnership with BACA & University of Sussex, funded by a generous grant from the Royal Society. Over the next year, students from Hove Park and BACA will be working alongside the Neuroscience department to investigate the use of neural interface technology to control a RC car and then design and build prosthetic arms. This is groundbreaking work and a really important stepping stone for our scientists and engineers of the future.
We held our annual Food Fair at the Valley campus today, celebrating the rich mix of cultures and backgrounds within our school community. Students in Years 7 and 8 prepared a fantastic range of dishes, and members of the wider community joined us in the hall to sample the many flavours, treats, and desserts on offer.
'Genuinely fun. Really cool. Sheeptastic. Cold and wet. Very tough. Beautiful scenery. Cool caves. Cold and wet. Gorgeous. Captivating valleys. Enchanted gorge. Friends and memories.’ Just some comments from the Year 10 Silver Duke of Edinburgh Assessed Expedition in the magical Peak District! You all rocked it!
Year 10 had a fantastic Careers Day this week, they had a whole day off timetable to start thinking about their next steps after Hove Park. They started a virtual work experience project, choosing from a range of subject and industry areas, and heard from speakers who came into school to talk to them about their careers, including journalism, advertising, the Army, and Civil Engineering. In the last session, students met with and talked to representatives from some of the 20+ different Colleges and training providers where they could carry on their education or training after Year 11. Many of the Colleges commented on the thoughtful and positive questions, and general level of engagement from our students – well done Year 10 😊

Tegan has had a fantastic pool lifesaving season.
In February, she competed for Brighton Surf Life Saving Club at the Wessex Regionals in Poole, winning medals in every event: gold in the Manikin Tow, Rescue Medley, Line Throw and Medley Relay, silver in the Manikin Carry, and bronze in the Obstacles.
In mid-March, she competed for Crawley Town at the Royal Life Saving Society National Speed Championships in Birmingham, where she won silver in the Manikin Tow. This was an especially memorable achievement, as an error with her entry time meant she was placed in a much slower heat, leading to an agonising wait to find out whether her time would be enough to secure her first RLSS national medal.
At the end of March, Tegan was back competing for Brighton at the Surf Life Saving National Championships in Cardiff. For the second year running, she won bronze in the Line Throw, reaching her casualty with her first throw and finishing ahead of many much older competitors.
After a much-needed rest over Easter, she is now preparing for the beach competition season.
What a fantastic Fun Run we had last week! A huge thank you to Hangleton Rangers Football Club, based in Hove, for sponsoring our event and providing the brilliant trophies for our winners. Congratulations to Willow and Walter from KS3, and Flynn and Ava-Lim from KS4, who all took home a trophy for their outstanding efforts.
A massive well done to all 300 runners who participated; every single one of you earned a fabulous medal for your fantastic achievement! We'd also like to extend our gratitude to our very own catering company, Innovate, for supplying delicious flapjacks and refreshing oranges, and to Tesco for donating bottles of water to keep everyone hydrated. Thank you to everyone who made the Fun Run such a success!
On Wednesday, our fantastic Year 9 and 10 Sports Leaders headed to Hangleton Primary School to help run the Hove and Portslade primary netball tournament. They welcomed 13 teams, handed out information packs, umpired matches, kept scores and guided schools to the right courts. Despite freezing temperatures and even a hail shower, they stayed enthusiastic, professional and supportive throughout. Staff were full of praise for how brilliantly they represented the school and have already asked if our Sports Leaders can help at future events. Well done, everyone.
Possibly the coldest netball fixture ever but the Year 7 and 8 netball teams toughed it out at Varndean yesterday. Year 8 had a match against Varndean and really started to click as a team. They showed some great passages of play and the shooters worked brilliantly together. They won the game 9 - 0. The Year 7 team played Varndean and Cardinal Newman. Both challenging but great games with a hardy performance from the team. Well done to all the players, hoping they have all warmed up now!
On Monday 23rd, Daz from Connors 5 charity came in to deliver a thought-provoking presentation and talk. Daz promoted themes such as kindness, care and looking out for one another. Students were left with the following message: to be brave, be bold and be kind.
Year 10 Student Voice students did a fundraiser at breaktimes today and raised £158 to donate to charity - an amazing achievement!
Well done to Year 10 who sat and listened with maturity, respect, and care.
To help prepare for their expedition to eSwatini in July several Year 10 and 11 students went camping on the South Downs this weekend. The students were brilliant and showed great reliance with sleeping outside in 0 degrees! They cooked over trangias, role played different safety situations, and navigated across the countryside. They all worked great as a team and are a credit to Hove Park.
In eSwatini our students will be working in rural areas, helping communities to look after orphans and will explore the wildlife through trekking and a safari.
This week, Hove Park hosted our Girls in STEM ‘Reach for the Stars’ event for the third time, made even bigger and better with the support of the University of Sussex. Twelve schools from across the city joined us for workshops designed to engage and inspire our young scientists and engineers of the future. Activities ranged from neuroscience and the physics of the light telephone to rocket and helicopter‑building workshops with Cardinal Newman and Brighton College sixth formers. The day rounded off with two amazing keynote speakers – Dr Ele D’Elia and Dame Helen Sharman, Britain’s first astronaut. We were over the moon!
Year 7 and 8 students have been working towards an exciting opportunity to perform as part of Hove Park School’s group dance at Let’s Dance 2026, held at Brighton Dome Theatre. The show welcomes all schools and ages across Brighton and Hove to perform to a live audience at this iconic city venue. On Tuesday, 17th March, thirty-two students travelled from the Valley site to the Dome to participate in this wonderful event and showcase their success, creating lifelong memories not only for themselves but also for the audience. Tickets were completely sold out for Tuesday night!
Throughout rehearsals, students have shown commitment, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude towards developing their performance. They have learnt and refined a structured routine, demonstrating key timings, coordination, and spatial awareness. Students have worked effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a group, contributing to the overall quality of their polished performance.
All students have grown in confidence throughout, and this was evident in their final performance on stage in front of a large audience. On the night, Hove Park really did shine, showing greater clarity of movement, expression, focus, and energy than ever before.
Overall, all students should feel proud of their amazing efforts and achievements. It was a wonderful evening where the audience clapped, cheered, and celebrated the accomplishments of all the young people who took part. Our students were fantastic and represented Hove Park School positively in a truly memorable final performance.
Let me know if you would like any further adjustments or a different tone!
Today was a beautiful day for Hove Park School's Fun Run! We had over 300 runners across all year groups who took on the undulating course in wonderful spirits, smiling and dancing their way around.
Many of the runners would have earned their green Every Child Should star as it was their first time running the event, all athletes definitely earned their finishing medals!
This year’s event was fully funded and completely free for all children. If you or someone you know can sponsor next year’s event please email ahunt@hovepark.org.uk

A great evening of basketball for the Year 9 team at PACA last Thursday night, in a tri-tournament against PACA and Cardinal Newman. The boys started brilliantly against PACA with a convincing win and some great shooting from Frank, and solid defence. In our second game, Cardinal Newman proved a strong opposition and ultimately came out on top in the end, despite some outstanding passages of play from Hove Park. Huge potential in this Year 9 Hove Park side, with a combination of experience, competitiveness, height and athleticism. Definitely one to watch for next season.
On Wednesday, Hove Park School was proud to host the Year 9 Netball Tournament, welcoming eight teams from across the city for a fantastic afternoon of competitive netball.
The tournament was played in two pools, with each team competing in a round-robin format before the final standings were decided. We entered two school teams, giving 18 of our Year 9 players the opportunity to represent the school and gain valuable match experience.
After being postponed three times due to poor weather, it was great to finally see the tournament go ahead – and the sun was shining, making it a perfect afternoon for netball.
A huge thank you goes to our Year 10 Sports Leaders, who played a key role in the success of the event. They helped organise keep scores, officiate games and ensure the tournament ran smoothly throughout the afternoon.
The standard of play across all teams was excellent, with great teamwork, defensive interceptions and accurate shooting on display. Our players represented the school brilliantly, showing determination, resilience and great sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
Well done to all those who took part, the event was a great success. Hove Park finished in 3rd place overall.
Yesterday we travelled to Patcham for the Year 7 Netball tournament in glorious sunshine before the sea mist set in for the evening. The team were enthusiastic and worked hard as they continued to test out playing in different positions. They played three games, no wins this time but lots of excitement about our next match tomorrow! Well done, team!
Our annual MEP trip to celebrate Chinese New Year in London took place yesterday, with 19 Year 8 students taking part.
We met bright and early at Brighton station before travelling to London Blackfriars. Led by Mr Knox, we headed to the British Museum to explore the Chinese and Korean galleries. Several students impressed us by reading the Chinese captions beneath the exhibits – a skill that neither Mr Knox nor Miss Jeffries could quite match!
After time to marvel at the displays, we made our way to Chinatown for a delicious Chinese meal. Everyone had a go at using chopsticks with varying degrees of success and, although we did our best to finish everything, staff still left with ten boxes of leftovers.
Once we had wished each other a happy new year in Chinese and finished lunch, students had the chance to explore Chinatown, visit a Chinese supermarket and choose a few treats, before we all rounded off the day with bubble tea.
The students were a credit to the school throughout. Both staff and students had a wonderful day – even if the 20,000‑plus steps around our capital might not be quite so popular!
Huge thanks to Miss Qiao for organising such a fantastic trip – we are already looking forward to next year.

A brilliant effort from our swimmers last night in the Brighton Schools Swimming Gala. Some standout performances include the boys in the Year 9/10 freestyle relay, where Percy, Simon, Floyd and Dylan, all from Year 9, came 4th in the 200m freestyle relay against some incredibly strong opposition. The girls’ Year 7 team were also inspirational, and Amalie, Ava, Maebh and Bea all did superbly, swimming up against Year 8 opposition in their events and even helping with Year 9/10 relays. Finally, a huge well done to Tegan for her heat win in the 50m freestyle.
Lovely to see the aquatic talent within the school on display and such positivity from the team and supporting parents poolside on the night. Huge well done to everyone who attended and supported the event!
Year 8 Netball Update.
It was 18 degrees as we arrived at Cardinal Newman for the Year 8 netball tournament, a beautiful day to play netball against all the local schools. Year 8 were stoic and worked hard against some strong teams. They won one game and battled to just miss out on some others. Huge well done to Year 8 who remained positive throughout and were a credit to Hove Park.
World Book Day 2026
All cake donations (homemade or shop bought) gratefully received on Thursday 5th March 2026 – Valley Campus only (Year 7 and 8) – to help raise money for Amaze The Story Trail Book Bench project and to celebrate reading. Students should drop off cakes at the LRC during Tutor time. Many thanks to all our families in advance for supporting this event.
With reading for pleasure in decline, this practical guide offers ten thoughtful ways to reignite children’s enthusiasm for books. From valuing all forms of reading to broadening access to diverse materials, it explores how adults can nurture positive reading habits both at home and in school. Digital tools, audiobooks and augmented reality are also considered as engaging ways to support today’s readers. It also highlights the power of social connection – recommending books, reading together and meeting authors – alongside the importance of modelling reading ourselves. This guide provides supportive, achievable ideas to help young people reconnect with reading and see it as a meaningful part of everyday life.
Seville Trip update - The students spent a long morning at our partner school, where we have worked since 2020. The school welcomed us in their beautiful chapel. The students had a tour of the school and then enjoyed listening to a presentation about Seville, with Austin, Jade and Victoria speaking about Brighton to the Spanish students. This was followed by some students playing football, dancing or playing cards with the Spanish students. We then said goodbye to our friends at Colegio Irlandesas Bami and, on the way home, stopped at the beautiful Plaza de España. Then we walked for half an hour to get churros in a square and in the evening we enjoyed a flamenco show in town.
What would you do if everything changed in a moment?
Our KS4 Book of the Month, explores consent, identity and the strength of friendship in the face of difficult choices.
A powerful, contemporary read — available in the library
⚠️ Trigger warning: contains mature themes including issues of consent and teenage pregnancy
Day three of our Seville trip really enriched our students’ cultural knowledge about the Arabic background of Seville. We visited the Alcázar royal palace, where students enjoyed seeing the peacocks and the ducks in the royal gardens, followed by a visit to the spectacular cathedral, which holds the tomb of Christopher Columbus.
The whole group enjoyed climbing to the top of the bell tower, and the day concluded with card games on the beautiful roof terrace of the hostel.
Last week, Year 8 took part in a Lego robotics coding day as part of exploring their possible GCSE options.
The day was themed around the upcoming NASA Artemis expedition. In each workshop, pairs of students built and coded a robot to navigate across the hall. Once they had successfully achieved this, they moved on to the Challenge Mission, tackling eight different tasks including crossing an uneven 'crater', rolling a 'space rock' to a target, and securing and relocating a 'satellite beacon'. As well as developing their coding, the event tested their scientific skills in investigation, adaptation and engineering. Every student showed different strengths across the day, but all demonstrated resilience and aspiration.
The day was made possible by a Neon grant secured by our STEM coordinator, Charlotte Lacny.

Our Year 9 team were in action in the Brighton League against Patcham High School on Monday 26 January. It was a strong and organised team performance.
After going 1-0 down, Hove Park showed great determination and resilience, responding with two well-worked goals. Patcham kept going and managed to grab a late equaliser to make it 2-2.
It was an evenly contested match that neither side deserved to lose. Well done to the whole squad.
The side are next in action in the derby against local rivals Blatchington Mill on Wednesday 4 February.
We were incredibly proud of the Year 10 basketball team last night for their efforts in the Year 10 basketball tournament. Their commitment to playing at training, lunch and break times, in all weathers, has led to this group producing some superb basketball to watch.
In a tournament with 15 teams, Hove Park entered A and B teams in two of the pool groups and arguably played some of the best team basketball on the night. Both teams eventually finished 2nd in their pools and reached the second play-off group, where they both beat Varndean's B side to take 4th and 5th place out of 15 teams. It was an absolute pleasure to see a group of players performing so well and loving the game.
Year 10 students engaged with a coffee making workshop yesterday with @howiescoffeeandco, from Barista Bros. After an inspiring assembly, students were taught how to make an espresso and then froth milk, before showing off their art skills. A great workshop, enjoyed by all who attended! Thanks, Howie and thanks too to our brilliant Enterprise Advisor @michaelgraing
This morning some Year 8 Student Leaders presented to the Year 7 students in assembly to talk about how they can earn their Every Child Should stars. They explained to the Year 7 students how they could earn each star and spoke about their own personal experience of achieving all of their stars last year. Here is also a group of amazing Year 7 students who have already gained three or four Every Child Should stars this year. Incredible!
Faraday Challenge – On Monday, three teams of Year 8 students travelled to BACA to take part in an engineering competition. The challenge was to build a battery-powered car that could travel 3 m and launch an air-powered rocket, whilst incorporating teamwork, project management and design skills.
It was a tough field, but all Hove Park teams led the pack, with one clear winner. A special commendation to Rich, who built in a speed control device which wowed the judges. Our Lego cup will appear in the display cabinet as soon as we have built it!
