Languages

The Languages curriculum at Hove Park School is broad and inclusive and whilst focused on language learning seeks also to underline key skills for life, such as literacy and cultural and global awareness and responsibility.

Language learning starts in Y7 with a carousel of the 4 languages - Chinese, French, German and Spanish. Students of all abilities having access to all four languages to facilitate an informed selection of a single language going on from Y8 and onto a three year KS4. All languages are supported by a wide range of clubs and links with schools in the target language countries.

Our teaching enables students to interact, convey information and express ideas through the modalities of Speaking and Writing. Listening and Reading skills are honed to enable learners to respond to the target language in authentic situations.

We understand the importance of raising cultural awareness of the countries in which our languages are spoken. This improves motivation and fosters tolerance and a sense of global citizenship.

We recognise our role in raising standards of literacy and explicitly and implicitly foster a broader awareness and understanding of the workings of English on both a grammatical and lexical level.

We want to share our passion for language learning and create an environment where students are encouraged to be take risks and to become confident and motivated learners who are able to communicate for the purposes of further education, employment and leisure, in the UK or abroad.
