WELLBEING AROU NDRESULTS DAY
Exam results day can be a highly emotional experience for young people, with many reporting feelings of anxiety or overwhelm. Beyond the grades themselves, results can stir up fear, disappointment, confusion, or even identity crises — especially when young people feel pressure to meet certain expectations from their families, teachers, or peers. For those students facing unexpected outcomes, the fast pace of clearing and other next steps can add further stress, while intense emotional reactions — including joy — can be difficult to process. This guide offers compassionate, practical strategies to support students before, during, and after results day — helping them feel seen, supported, and equipped to navigate it, whatever the outcome.
As part of a DofE expedition, on Monday, some Year 9 Cullum Centre students walked to Green Ridge and the pond, learning to read maps and use a compass to find their bearings. They recorded types of plants and trees in Hove Park and Green Ridge.
On Thursday, the students also visited the school allotment, cleared weeds, and cooked lunch on a gas stove. Everyone had a great time!
Sports Day is here!
As we look forward to an exciting day ahead, we wanted to share a recent film capturing the spirit of this special event. Sports Day is one of those moments in the school year when our entire community comes together. Each year, new stars emerge, showing us all what can be achieved through hard work and dedication. Athletes, supporters, and staff all play a vital role in making this day a highlight of the school calendar, a true reflection of our school vision: ‘Together We Achieve.’
Last night, our Year 11s had an amazing time at their graduation prom, held in the beautiful setting of Pangdean Barn. The evening was full of smiles, great music, and memories to last a lifetime as we celebrated all the hard work and achievements of these fantastic students. It was the perfect way to mark the end of their school journey before they head off to new adventures. We wish them all the best as they take on the next exciting chapter of their lives!
Jimbo is the school mascot. He was born in April 2025 and was named shortly after that. The students were not only allowed to suggest a name for the mascot, but they were also invited to suggest trips they would like him to go on. Here are the suggestions the students l isted:
- China
- Sea swimming
- Duke of Edinburgh
- Big Camp
- Prom
- Music performance – Big Camp
- Rockley
- Sussex University
- Benfield Valley hike
- Valley Challenge
Jimbo has attended all the above trips! (One Jimbo is in China and the other is getting ready for the Year 11 Prom tonight!)
‘I loved holding him up in the sea!’ Year 8 student
‘I put him on my rucksack and he kept me company.’ Year 10 student
‘Jimbo sat on the drum kit at Big Camp and the Year 7 students loved that!’ Year 8 student

‘Students who are feeling sad can hold Jimbo.’ Year 8 student
‘We took him to the Peak District and he toasted marshmallows. He slept in his own sleeping bag!’ Year 10 student
Today marked the final day at school for our Year 11 students. They came together for a memorable leavers assembly, followed by the traditional jumper signing. We look forward to celebrating their achievements tonight at the Year 11 prom at Pangdean Barn. We wish them a wonderful evening and every success in the future.
China trip day 2 update from Cai and Everlyn...
Today, we did lots of things. First, we had breakfast; it was very delicious (scrumptious, says Cai). Then we went to a classroom and learnt lots of Chinese. We mainly learnt about food and drink, for example, 𰻝𰻝面 biang biang noodles, a traditional dish in Xi’an. 肉夹馍 is similar to what we call a burger and is a highly popular and sought-after food. After that, we learnt about the rules of fire safety and general safety 🙂.
Afterwards, we had a very nice lunch and then met some students who go to school in Xi’an. It was really nice because they were the same age as us and really easy to get along with. They taught us a song and some of the games they play here, e.g. Connect 5 and Go Fish.
Later on, we attended the opening ceremony. Maximums made a wonderful speech, and Ms Qiao did the shouting game brilliantly. At the end of the ceremony, a performer did a face-changing act where he changed the mask on his face really smoothly, and you couldn’t tell how he was doing it.
Then it was dinner. Dinner was very, very delicious, and they had lots of food including watermelon, which I love (from Everlyn). As we had done well in the ceremony, a Xisu tour guide took us to the town square to experience the night market of Xi’an. There was lots of dancing and singing, and a kind person let us try the dragon kite. Then I bought a dragon fruit (Everlyn). We walked back and turned in for the night.
Today, our students have been taking part in a special Sea Swimming and Lifeguarding experience. They have been developing essential first aid skills and lifesaving techniques while learning about the responsibilities and challenges faced by Brighton lifeguards. The day combines practical learning with an enjoyable time by the sea, creating a memorable and rewarding experience.
Last week, our EcoTeam celebrated another successful year working with other secondaries to make our schools more sustainable. We visited Varndean School and made smoothies from ‘out-of-date’ but perfectly yummy fruit. We admired their excellent recycling systems and visited the Dorothy Stringer nature reserve where we spotted 20 different species of butterfly and moth.
We are very excited to start our own biodiversity journey next year with our £1000 grant from South Downs Trust to Rewild Hove Park School.
Our students are currently taking part in a Sea Swimming / Life Guarding day, where they are learning vital first aid and lifesaving skills. They are also discovering what it takes to be a Brighton lifeguard, gaining valuable insights into beach safety. It promises to be an engaging day of practical learning, combined with fun by the sea.
Bronze Duke Of Edinburgh expedition highlights! All groups are out on the South Downs with Jimbo strapped in. Jimbo has Rockley pencilled in but he has no clothes suitable for water sports and outdoor pursuits… any donations to either office site! Lunch at YHA with epic views and check point 4 has been smashed!!! #HPSBronzeDofE
Nintendo’s long-awaited Switch 2 has finally arrived, blending fresh hardware with fan-favourite franchises. From Mario to Pikachu, the familiar mascots are back – but so too are evolving online features, in-game purchases, and potential exposure to mature content. As ever, it’s essential that parents and educators understand the risks to young players.
Among these are GameChat voice communication, camera-based gaming, and potential access to mature-rated titles. This guide outlines what to watch out for and how to keep children safe, engaged and having fun.

Generative AI can be a brilliant tool for creativity and learning – but it’s not without its hazards. With 3 in 4 pupils now using generative AI (up from just 2 in 5 last year!), it’s more important than ever for parents and educators to understand the risks. This week’s #WakeUpWednesday guide from the National College breaks down the key safety concerns around generative AI tools and offers expert advice for keeping young users safe. From encouraging critical thinking to safeguarding their privacy, find out how to help children use AI safely and smartly.
Our fantastic Sports Leaders assisted at a Primary School Racket Festival at Withdeoday. The Racket Festival aimed to introduce young children to racket sports. All Year 3 and Year 4 pupils attended sessions in table tennis, squash, tennis, and multi-sports to help with hand-eye coordination.
The Sports Leaders attended training sessions beforehand, where they were taught how to assist with the running of an event and learned how to officiate games in several different racket sports.
This was a great opportunity for our Leaders, and all the Primary schools were extremely impressed, with lots of positive feedback.
They say a picture’s worth a thousand words and when it comes to emojis; that’s often true. But in the wrong context, these innocent-seeming icons can take on a whole new meaning, sometimes hinting at things that aren’t as light-hearted as they appear. This week’s #WakeUpWednesday Guide from the National College breaks down some of the slang and symbols young people use online and explains how some could be masking real issues, from bullying and exclusion to harmful behaviours. With this handy cheat sheet and top tips, adults can keep pace with this ever-changing digital language.
DofE Highlights!!! 7 Year 10 groups navigated some complex routes around the stunning scenery in the Peak District this week.... Go team Silver! These students finished 3 tough days of walking, 2 nights of freezing camping and have all made us very proud for completely their Silver DofE Expedition! The Peak District delivered in the beauty of its scenery and wonderful weather - perfect!
Hove Park School's renowned Valley Challenge is next month. Year 8 students will walk from our Valley Campus across the South Downs National Park to Small Dole near Henfield, where they will camp overnight before returning via the Adur Valley. This event has become a significant day in students' lives at Hove Park, as you can see from this video.
In anticipation of the Women’s Rugby World Cup being held in England, Year 8 and Year 9 students from Hove Park School supported a primary school rugby festival. They spent the morning learning how to run drills and games, and developing their leadership and communication skills. In the afternoon, they helped run the festival, which involved over one hundred girls from local primary schools. It was truly inspiring to see so many young women enjoying rugby, and the sports leaders from Hove Park were incredible ambassadors for the school.
The festival was also attended by the founders of Maddy’s Mark. Maddy’s Mark is a charity set up by Maddy’s parents in her memory. Maddy was a huge rugby fan, and the charity aims to support the mental health and wellbeing of young women by making rugby accessible to all who wish to play. Our students have benefited directly from this, as the charity has funded rugby sessions for our students during enrichment time. It was lovely for our girls to meet Maddy’s family and show their appreciation.
The day truly was an amazing celebration of girls and sport.
On Friday 2nd May, six students who attend the KS4 after-school Classics club went on a tour of Classical architecture as expressed in Regency Hove. Most Fridays, in the Classics club, we have been studying Homer's *Odyssey*, with occasional forays into Roman art and culture. However, this time the students travelled to analyse the elements of Classical architecture in Hove. They studied the different orders—such as Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian—and learned to recognise other features, as well as how Classical architecture is an assemblage of parts with a beginning, middle, and end that mirror each other. It was an enjoyable session.
Our students had a fantastic time participating in the Children's Parade last weekend! It was a day filled with joy and creativity as students from all over showcased their vibrant costumes and artistic creations.
A huge thank you to the organisers and everyone who came out to support! Together, we celebrated the spirit of community and imagination.
DofE update: All groups successfully made it to the campsite last night and set up camp together. This was the biggest Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award Hove Park School has ever undertaken, and our students rose to the challenge brilliantly. After pitching their tents, everyone gathered around the campfire and enjoyed toasting marshmallows. It was a fantastic evening, and everyone had a great time camping out together!
A strong sense of belonging is the foundation for emotional wellbeing, confidence, and academic success. But how can schools and families create truly inclusive environments where every child feels seen, heard, and valued?
Packed with practical, easy-to-apply tips (like celebrating individuality, promoting participation, and tackling bullying head-on) this guide from the National College empowers parents and educators to foster a culture of belonging at school and at home.
A fantastic afternoon in the sand today at Yellowave Beach Volleyball Centre. Huge thanks to Coach Neil for all the hard work on Thursdays after school, and to Katie and the entire team at Yellowave for hosting such a great event.
The Year 7s finished 3rd overall, and the Year 8 team secured second place, narrowly missing out to Blatchington Mill in the final. Huge well done to everyone involved!
Two Hove Park Year 8 students, Chloe and Bea, play for Lewes FC Select. In their first season playing together, they have proudly taken the title of Champions in the National Junior Premier League. The team has also reached the national cup final, where they will compete against Arsenal on May 10th!
Chloe, who captains the team, said, “I’ve loved playing in the JPL, and I’m so proud of how we’ve developed as a team. All the hard work the girls have put in has paid off, and we are all so excited to get to the final. It’s so cool to play against a big name like Arsenal, but we’ll treat the match the same as any team we play – working hard for each other and giving it our all. Win or lose, we’ll enjoy every minute.”
Traffic-related incidents are a major risk for young pedestrians and cyclists, which is why it’s so important to equip children with the skills they need to stay safe. Essential, easy-to-teach habits that help children build lifelong road safety awareness, from spotting quieter electric vehicles to crossing safely at designated points, are in this week’s National College guide, packed with tips to keep young road users visible, vigilant and secure, including practical advice like making ‘practice’ journeys, wearing reflective clothing and staying focused near roads.
Yesterday, a fantastic Athletics event was hosted by Ms Satterly at Withdean Stadium, featuring schools from all around Sussex. The event proved to be a major success, with Hove Park's Noa winning the Discus and Shot Put events. Additionally, some of our Year 9 sports leaders helped things run incredibly smoothly. Overall, it was a fantastic event for all involved!
Today we had the pleasure of welcoming a group of educators from Iceland to our school as they explored digital teaching and learning in action. They were expertly hosted by our amazing Year 7 Digital Leaders, who led inspiring tours of the Valley Campus and shared their favourite digital learning tools. A fantastic exchange of ideas and innovation—thank you to our visitors for joining us and for the 5/5 Star rating on your experiences with us!

Over the past seven weeks, Tegan has been competing for Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club in the regional and national pool championships. At the Wessex Regional Nipper competition, Tegan medalled in seven out of the eight events, retaining her board, board rescue, and board relay titles. A week later, Tegan competed for the first time in the youth category at the Wessex Regionals. She gained a Gold in the manikin carry with fins, Silver in the obstacle race, and a Bronze in the manikin carry without fins.
At the end of March, Tegan travelled to Cardiff for the Nippers British Surf Lifesaving Championships, where she competed against 98 other females in her age group. Tegan placed 8th in the tube rescue, 11th in the board rescue, 10th in the manikin relay, and 17th in the board and medley relay races.
Tegan had a fantastic finish to the season at the Youth British Surf Lifesaving Championships last weekend in Cardiff. Tegan placed 13th in the medley relay, 12th in the manikin carry with fins and manikin tow, 10th in the obstacle race, 5th in the manikin carry without fins, 4th in the manikin relay, and won Bronze in the line throw! We believe this is the first national medal for Team Brighton, and we are super proud!
We hope she hasn’t been too tired at school this week – it was a full-on weekend!
We are thrilled to announce we've secured another year of Sport England funding for our after-school volleyball club! The free sessions, supported by Yellowave Beach Sports, are helping students build fitness, teamwork, and a love for the game. Their tent and sleeping bag for the Silver Duke of Edinburgh next week are on order!
Making friends online can open doors to exciting new experiences, but it can also expose children to serious risks. Around 19% of children aged 10 to 15 in England and Wales have chatted online with someone they’ve never met face to face. With advice on encouraging safer habits, spotting red flags and keeping communication open, this week’s guide from the National College offers guidance. It’s all about helping children navigate online friendships safely, confidently — and most importantly, happily.
As the lead school for the Brighton and Hove Ogden Trust hub, we are pleased to announce that one of our partner schools, Brunswick Primary, has just been awarded a grant to set up a Phiz lab in the school. This comes with a range of equipment, resources, and bespoke activities for teachers to enrich the curriculum. When installed next year, the new Phiz lab will allow children to experience science in an awe-inspiring way, raising aspirations in STEM subjects and making it accessible to all learners. The lab will also be open to other partner primary schools, as well as offering different opportunities for community involvement.
Great turnout tonight at the table tennis club with Brighton Table Tennis and Volleyball alongside Yellowave.
Both clubs run from 3:00 to 4:10 PM and have an evening session from 4:20 to 5:30 PM every Thursday. Sessions are free to attend and open to all.
Beach volleyball is now held outside when the weather permits during the summer term.
