Literacy Strategy

The Hove Park School Literacy Strategy sets out to develop a broad range of literacy skills (reading, writing, spoken language and vocabulary acquisition) that is essential to the achievement of a rich and fulfilling life. Improving literacy can have an impact on pupils’ self-esteem, motivation, behaviour and attainment alongside their enjoyment of academic study/progress and school life more generally.

Hove Park School has a developed Literacy Strategy that takes guidance from the Educational Endowment Fund (EEF); Department for Education (DfE) and other institutions that research and promote strategies to improve reading and literacy outcomes, e.g. The National Literacy Trust.

Our priorities are:

Priority 1:  Students to sustain and develop skills to be lifelong readers

Priority 2: Embed key Literacy strategies across all Faculties and Teachers

  • Literacy Marking: using the HPS Literacy Marking Codes
  • Spoken Language: using Think-Pair-Share
  • Vocabulary: Tier 2 explicit vocabulary teaching using the Frayer Model
  • Reading: Reciprocal Reading Strategies

Literacy Intervention / SEND

Hove Park School is committed to a coordinated approach to supporting our struggling readers. Reading Intervention programmes are ‘bespoke’ and tailored to the needs of the individual student. Pupil Passports provide teachers and support staff with Literacy Strategies and information on student reading age and ability (as assessed via Sparx Reader).
