Access to deeper learning in Design Technology

KS3 Design Technology

In KS4 design technology our HPA students are challenged through a wide variety of theory and practical projects where there is ample opportunity for the students to achieve innovative outcomes resulting from problem solving tasks that further stretch their capabilities.

Year 11 HPA students are encouraged to select the challenging coursework projects set by the exam board that further extends their knowledge and skills, working primarily with a client to produce a final product that is both innovative and workable within a real life situation.

All HPA students have opportunities for extended learning through weekly AFEX (aiming for excellence) sessions where they can further extend both theory and practical outcomes.

KS3 Design Technology

In Design Technology we have high expectations and stretch all students to work to the best of their ability and HPA within the day to day workshop situations. In addition to this, all schemes of work incorporate success criteria which allow students to self-assess work independently and understand how work can be improved and moved to the next level. Access to challenge cards give students the opportunity to complete extension tasks which are relevant to individual projects. All project folders have key words which encourages students to use the correct terminology and improve vocabulary.

Extended project work

Each subject at HPS aims to provide our HPA community with an insight into acquiring the key skills needed to prepare for EPQ type projects at A Level. These projects are designed to develop core skills required in the workplace closely linked to subjects that interest our HPA students. Follow the link here to access the subject-specific projects we are offering to students from September 2020.

About EPQ after GCSE?

An EPQ provides further academic stretch and challenge alongside A Level studies and also helps to evidence a genuine interest in a specific area (which is useful for UCAS university applications). An EPQ also carries UCAS points and is valued at 50% of a full A Level in the UCAS tariff.
